The Trullo is common in a particular area called the Itria Valley. This is a typical peasant building in which the "cozzaro" (the man who used to cultivate the ground) could have a bed to sleep on and a place where to keep his tools.
"Trulli" were originally conceived to avoid paying the house taxes. In addition, there are various theories about this: one of those says that the "trulli" were used to warn people through smoke signals that tax inspections were about to show up; in that case the workers used to literally take the roof off, then awaiting to build it again only once the perilous situation was gone. Some popular rumors assert that when the ground-workers were asked to pay the house taxes, they pulled out a single stone to make the whole building collapse. By doing so, they showed that it was not an house, but only a heap of stones....
